Muse Sauvignon 2016

Drinking Guide

Drink 2016-2024

Our Muse Sauvignon is single vineyard Sauvignon blanc made in the Bordeaux tradition. Cellaring provides further elegance and complexity. The bouquet offers intense and pure fruit: grapes, currents, blackberries and tropical fruit with wild herbs, aniseed and other oak derived spice. After maturation for the first time in 1500 litre foudres, the tannins are seamlessly integrated. Persistent flavours, its generous weight, body and acidity indicate it is a wine destined to cellar well.

Vintage Description
Technical Details

As with previous releases, I’ve made this wine to sit somewhere in-between a typical Sauvignon blanc and a Fumé blanc, therefore, it is simply called Sauvignon. Much effort is always placed into making a wine that is interesting, funky and complex while remaining approachable. Texture and structure are paramount. The wine is a blend of several batches of stainless steel fermented but mostly barrel-fermented wines. 2015 was a very peculiar season. Weather from the tail end of veraison and through the whole of vintage, was extremely variable with hot days mixed with cold days and rain and sun all mixed up. Most of what I would consider typical in terms of ripening sequence and development was completely reversed. The point of peak ripeness was very hard to get in that trends were non-existent. Yields however were good.

“Demonstrates the strong affinity between barrel fermentation and sauvignon blanc. Piercing aromas of black currant, lemon oil, anise and durian wax lyrical at the attack, while the barrel work (1500l foudres) imbues a textural breadth and detail, without impinging on the herbaceous cut and thrust of the varietal personality. Top gold Tas Wine Show '16.” 96 points. Red Star award for special value The Wine Companion 2018, August 1 2017, by Ned Goodwin MW “Light yellow colour; a fresh, clean, fruit-driven style, with a gentle whiff of oak. The wine is intense and focused, fine and elegant, with balance and drinkability. A delicious wine, balanced and long. 95 Points” www.huonhooke.com.au, by Huon Hooke, 18/1/2017
