Muse Pinot Gris 2015

Drinking Guide

Drink 2016-2021

Great effort goes to crafting a wine that provides a balance between fruit, spice, mineral and wild fermentation funkiness; twenty percent is fermented wild, 40 per cent in old oak and two thirds is allowed extended contact with skins. The bouquet is reminiscent of the autumn harvest : apples, pears, dried grass and lemons. Flavours build in intensity. Texture, tannins and the natural acidity provide a structured Pinot gris.

Tempering wild yeast against inoculated yeast has worked very well for many years now as I think it provides balance between fruit, spice, mineral and wild fermentation funkiness. As with all Muse wines the emphasis when we blended the wine was not to achieve intense fruit but rather subtlety, complexity and texture. I consider this wine an excellent food wine but to keep the wine drinking in the balance that I try for in the winery I think it would still be best for drinking within 5 years of release. However, it will last longer. As a season, 2015 turned out to be one of the strongest vintages I’ve ever had the pleasure of working. While it was challenging in terms of logistics; fruit quality I think rivals 2012. The main difference is that 2015 saw better flavour development at lower sugars and higher acidity. For these reasons I think I prefer the wines of 2015.
