Muse Pinot Gris 2016

Drinking Guide

Drink 2017-2022

$35

QTY

Our Pinot gris has developed a fine reputation for complexity and texture. Made in small batches, great effort goes to crafting a wine that provides a balance between fruit, spice, mineral and wild fermentation funkiness. Grapes are hand-picked when ripe to offer both fruit and floral flavours. Extended skin contact, wild fermentation and oak maturation each add structure and character. The bouquet of 2016 is fresh with apples and pears and rich with wild honey, nuts and straw. Intense flavours linger, revealing texture, fine tannins and natural acidity. Careful cellaring will reward those who enjoy mature Pinot gris.

Tempering wild yeast against inoculated yeast has worked very well for many years now as I think it provides balance between fruit, spice, mineral and wild fermentation funkiness. As with all Muse wines the emphasis when we blended the wine was not to achieve intense fruit but rather subtlety, complexity and texture. I consider this wine an excellent food wine but to keep the wine drinking in the balance that I try for in the winery I think it would still be best for drinking within 5 years of release. However, it will last longer. As a season, 2016 was full of high hopes. Some poorly timed rain created concern at first but after a few months, it became apparent that the warmth of the season contributed to intense aromas. The season also proved to be very high yielding with us starting and ending vintage weeks
