In 2010, our vintage witnessed a warm summer and ideal autumn. Complex aromas and flavours were vibrant at harvest; the floral and spice offer perfume while fruit, leafy and vegetal characters are ideally balanced. The goal of the winemaking was to harmoniously match fine texture to the very fine tannins of this vintage. Eighteen months of maturation in a combination barriques, hogsheads and puncheons with full malo-lactic fermentation achieved our goal. The single vineyard wine is smooth yet firm, traditionally matched with slow cooked dishes and will benefit from decanting over the course of its long life.

Despite many differing opinions, I believe Tasmania has the capacity to make some excellent Bordeaux styled blends. This relies on a combination of good site selection, viticultural practices and attention in the winery. This wine is a fine example of such a cool climate blend. Earthy and powerful Cabernet Sauvignon blended with soft, fruit driven and velvety Merlot and floral and round Cabernet franc combine to create a full-bodied wine that is approachable now but will improve in time. Rich and complex it will benefit from decanting over the course of its long life. This is our first Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend since 2006 thanks to viticultural work which showed that much of our Merlot is in fact Cabernet franc. As a season, 2010 was a warm summer followed by a moderate autumn which allowed us to harvest weeks earlier than 2009 despite good yields. As with all our wines, the fruit was handpicked. Picking was performed once herbaceous or green characters decreased and fruit flavours were dominant.
