Muse Syrah 2009

Drinking Guide

Drink 2012-2027

Our 30 year old vines located on the single St.Matthias vineyard offer a rare Syrah. It displays the tension of cool climate finesse and richness, a balance of fruit and spice and so we call it by its traditional French name, Syrah. The fruit is dark and deep, in contrast to the spice and floral perfume and will integrate with the oak. This is not a wine for those who prefer big jammy Shiraz. Concentrated, delicate and balanced, only six barrels were produced. It can be enjoyed now and through the next two decades. Matches well with food now or later.

Vintage Description
Technical Details

Compared to the 2008 vintage, this wine is a little more generous with upfront fruit while having less overt oak and more aciditiy. As with the 2008 release this release shows the finesse and richness possible in cool climate Shiraz. While you may expect some vegetal undertones, there is a huge reservoir of spice, fruit and floral elements that will continue to develop with maturation in bottle. Any attempt at this wine within 8 years would benefit with decanting. As it is not typically Australian in its profile, we have opted to call it by its traditional French name, Syrah. The fruit was sourced from the Moorilla owned and operated St. Matthias vineyard, north-east facing on the West Bank of the Tamar River. The fruit was left on the vine until flavour profiles showed an increase in fruit/berry characters before it was hand-picked. Total available fruit for this wine was much higher in 2009 when compared to last season as both our top and bottom blocks were used and the timing of picking was perfect. As 2009 was a cooler season, harvest was delayed.
