Muse Syrah 2012

Drinking Guide

Drink 2010-2030

This is rare single vineyard wine; 2011 produced none. Two different blocks at the St. Matthias vineyard are combined together. Grapes close to the Tamar River in fertile soils and warmer air are concentrated, darker and richer. Grapes higher in the vineyards are delicate, light and reveal more minerality. The cool Tasmanian climate ripens our Shiraz slowly. This retains fresh pepper spice and a floral perfume. The cool autumn leads to ripe berry flavours, gossamer tannins and beautiful natural acidity. Cellaring will offer further complexity

Vintage Description
Technical Details

Compared to earlier vintages, this wine is more similar to the 2010 in that it’s again suppler with more upfront fruit and improved oak integration. The inclusion of the top block provides a little more acidity. As with the all our releases the 2010 shows the finesse and richness possible in cool climate Shiraz. It was a shame that 2011 which was such a strong vintage for us with most varieties didn’t quite bring us the chance to make a released wine. With a huge reservoir of spice, fruit and floral elements that will continue to develop with maturation in bottle, we have continued to call it by its traditional French name, Syrah. The fruit was left on the vine until flavour profiles showed an increase in fruit/berry characters before it was hand-picked. Total available fruit for this wine was again much higher than past seasons as both our top and bottom blocks were used and the timing of picking was perfect. At the same time a new block of fruit that we planted from cuttings of our bottom block also provided fruit for the first time.
