Muse Chardonnay 2016

Drinking Guide

Drink 2020–2031.

$45

QTY

A generous and bright nose offers ripe notes of a warm Tasmanian vintage: figs, white peaches, pears and limes. The subtle fragrances of anise, almonds, vanilla bean and sesame add complexity. On the palate, Moorilla’s Chardonnay is a play of elegance and promise, of stone fruit, sweet spices and grapefruit flavours, texture, tannins and the long natural acidity that will soften with cellaring or suit a dinner party dish if presented young. Drink 2020–2031.

Vintage Description
Technical Details

A level of integration and austerity, which I think best shows the Tasmanian terroir, is again shown in this wine. Taut acidity and tannins give the wine great minerality, which is kept fresh via the lack of malo-lactic fermentation. The result is fruit, wild fermentation and oak characters in harmony with a solid backbone. This wine will drink very well in its youth but will also soften and improve with maturation. Look for integrated oak and the chalky minerality balanced with fruit weight, tight acidity and roundness from battonage: vineyard expression and technical winemaking. Picking was again organised around a desire to achieve a range of ripeness and flavour profiles in the finished wine, as seen below. We aim to harvest on approximately the same day so we get the variation between the river front and our other block of Chardonnay, which is the highest and furthest from the river. As for the season, 2015 was a very peculiar. From the tail end of veraison through the whole of vintage, the weather was extremely variable with hot days mixed with cold days, and rain and sun all mixed up. Most of what I would consider typical in terms of ripening sequence and development was completely reversed. Yields, however, were good, as was the resulting very high quality wine.
