Drink 2016-2029

2014 gave precious few wines. Spring rain and wind hindered pollination. With so few grapes resulting, vines provided a concentration we'll savour for many years. Our Muse Chardonnay offers a balance of pure fruit and interesting funk. It’s a wine of mystery and surprise. Apples and summer hay swirl about with candied ginger, hazelnut nougat, vanilla bean and chocolate. Maritime oak is reserved. Matchsticks offer chardonnay lovers something extra. Intense and long flavours, elegant weight, deliberate texture, stately tannins and youthful acidity balance one another and promise a long and lovely future.

Technical Details

A level of integration and austerity that I think best shows the Tasmanian terroir is again shown in this wine. Taut acidity and tannins give the wine great minerality that's kept fresh via the lack of malo-lactic fermentation. The result is fruit, wild fermentation and oak characters in harmony with a solid backbone. This wine will drink very well in its youth but will also soften and improve with maturation. Look for integrated oak and the chalky minerality balanced between fruit weight, tight acidity and roundness from battonage: vineyard expression and technical winemaking. Picking was again organised around a desire to achieve a range of ripeness and flavour profiles in the finished wine, as seen below. We aim to harvest on approximately the same day so we get the variation between being at river front and our other block of Chardonnay which is the highest and furthest from the river. Again, 2014 showed very low yields due to the poor weather at fruit set experienced through Tasmania. Chardonnay was one of the varieties that fared better than others but yields were still much lower than average.
